Questions About Heathy Diets

Question:  How can I follow a healthy diet if I eat out a lot?
Answer:  The American Heart Association gives these tips for a healthy diet, even
when you aren't cooking at home:

1.  Ask the server to make substitutions, like having steamed vegetables
instead of fries.
2.  Pick lean meat, fish, or skinless chicken.
3.  Make sure your meal is broiled, baked, grilled, steamed, or poached
instead of fried.
4.  Ask for baked, boiled, or roasted potatoes instead of fried.
5.  Order lots of vegetable side dishes and ask that any sauces or butter
be left off.
6.  Ask for low-calorie salad dressing or a lemon to squeeze on your salad
instead of dressing.
7.  Order fresh fruit or fruit sorbet in place of cake, pie, or ice cream
desserts.

Question:  For a 2000 calorie-a-day diet, how much fruit do you need a day?
Answer:  2 cups of fruit each day (for example: 1 small banana, 1 large orange,
and 1/4 cup of dried apricots or peaches)

Question:  I want to avoid meat, but where will I get protein in my diet?
Answer:  Good sources of protein are found in dairy products.  Milk, yogurt, cheese all contain good quality protein.  Eggs, particularly egg white, are also a source of high quality protein.  Legumes, such as soy and lentils, combined with grains provide protein, as well.

Question:  I am trying to make my diet fat free.  Is this ok?
Answer:  Low fat diets are recommended for avoiding gaining extra weight, preventing cardiac disease and cancer.  However, a totally fat free diet is not good.  The body needs a small amount of fat each day to provide essential fatty acids that cannot be produced in the body.

Question:  How many calories will I burn running?
Answer:  The rule of thumb is 100 calories per mile.  Run a mile or walk a mile; both burn off 100 calories, running just does it faster.
