Contraception Options

You may be considering a birth control method for the very first time, or you may be considering a new method as your needs change. This web site is designed to give you a brief description of the various types of birth control that are available to you. After you have looked at all the options, you may want to discuss your choices with your health care professional.

Certain factors will influence your decision, such as your present lifestyle, your age, if you smoke, your health, how often you have sex, and your relationship with your partner. In addition, think about the following issues:

  • Do I have concerns about using this method?
  • Are there any medical reasons why I should not use this method?
  • Will I have trouble remembering to use this method?
  • Will this method make my periods longer or more painful?
  • Will my partner have concerns about this method?
  • Will either my partner or I be embarrassed by this method?
  • Is this method disruptive during sex?
Not everyone chooses to have sex. Some people choose to abstain to avoid any risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection (STI). Some choose to abstain because of their beliefs or values. Some abstain because they simply are not ready for intercourse. Remember, abstinence is the only 100% certain way of not becoming pregnant or acquiring a sexually transmitted infection.

You have the right to have your values and limits respected.
You have the right to refuse sex any time, for any reason.

The NDSU Student Health Service wants you to be able to make decisions based on knowledge and correct information about birth control options. This site is designed to give you the information you need.
