Your Reproductive Health - Barrier Methods
Barrier Methods of Birth Control
Barrier methods of birth control act by putting a "barrier" or protective wall to block sperm from entering the cervix. Barrier methods include condoms (both male and female), the diaphragm, and the cervical cap. The last two require a fitting and a prescription from a health care provider. Condoms are available without a prescription.
No matter which barrier method you choose, learn how to use it properly and be sure to use a water-based lubricant to reduce the possibility of breakage. For maximum protection, use a spermicide every time you use a diaphragm or cervical cap.
In addition to preventing pregnancy, condoms have been shown to provide some protection against HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
The diaphragm and cervical cap DO NOT provide protection against HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections.
