Wallman Wellness Center Advisory Board

Policy Statement

Approved by the Vice President for Student Affairs, Prakash Mathew, 2007.

1. Institutional Recognition

The University President has delegated the primary responsibility of the Wallman Wellness Center to the Vice President for Student Affairs with the Wallman Wellness Center Advisory Board serving in an advisory capacity to the Wallman Wellness Center Director.

2. Purpose and Responsibility

The purpose of the Wallman Wellness Center is to complement the educational mission of the institution through the services and programs that promote and foster opportunities for students to learn about and practice healthy lifestyle behaviors. The programs and services offered by the Wallman Wellness Center seek to meet the health and wellness needs of the campus community. The Wallman Wellness Center provides programs and services through its Student Health Service, Child Care Programs, Fitness Programs, Campus Recreation and Intramurals and Wellness Education. The Advisory Board shall seek to represent the interests of University faculty, staff, alumni, and students in advising the Associate Dean for Student Wellness, Wallman Wellness Center Director, Associate Director of Student Health Service, Associate Director of Fitness Programs, Assistant Director of Child Care Services and Vice President for Student Affairs on policy matters relating to the operation, use, improvement, and expansion of the Wallman Wellness Center building at North Dakota State University.

3. Members

The Advisory Board is comprised of twelve (12) members, six (6) students, two (2) faculty members, two (2) staff members and two (2) alumni members.  Students serve as members until they graduate or resign from their position on the board. Alumni, faculty and staff board members will be appointed for alternating, 4-year terms with a one (1) term limit.  The Vice President for Student Affairs, Wallman Wellness Center Director, Associate Dean for Student Wellness, Associate Director of Student Health Service, Associate Director of Fitness Programs and the Assistant Director of Child Care Services serve as ex-officio members of the Advisory Board (permanent members).

One of the student representatives will be selected by the Advisory Board membership to chair the Wallman Wellness Center Advisory Board meetings each year.  The chair position will be selected at the April Advisory Board meeting each year.

To fill any open Advisory Board positions, The Wallman Wellness Center Director will solicit nominations or applications for open positions from staff, students, alumni association, and members of the Wallman Wellness Center. The names of the selected individuals will be forwarded to the Associate Dean for Student Wellness and the Vice President for Student Affairs for approval before being appointed. .

4. Meetings

Advisory Board meetings will be held 3 – 5 times per semester during fall and spring semesters. The Wallman Wellness Center staff is responsible for scheduling meeting dates, coordinating meeting arrangements, and notifying board members of meetings.  The Advisory Board Chair works with the Wallman Wellness Center Director to develop the meeting agenda.

Board members are encouraged to attend all Advisory Board meetings; no substitutions are permitted. Any board member who misses three academic year meetings may be asked to forfeit his/her position on the board.

Minutes from the previous meetings will be provided to the members of the Advisory Board at each of the meetings or through e-mail.  Advisory Board members will be asked for corrections and changes so that a historic record can be kept.

Group consensus or recommendations will be used in decision making rather than a formal voting mechanism.

5. Committees

Ad hoc committees will be established as needs and interests are identified. All ad hoc committees must have an equal number of students to other committee members.  (Example, 1 faculty member, 1 staff member, 1 alumni member, 3 student members)
